Bobcat Spikers Open Big Sky Season at Idaho State

The Montana State volleyball team will play one more match on the road, before making its first home appearance in Shroyer Gym on Saturday night.

BIG SKY OPENER:
The Montana State volleyball team will play one more match on the road, before making its first home appearance in Shroyer Gym on Saturday night. The Bobcats will open Big Sky play at Idaho State on Thursday, Sept. 25 at Reed Gym in Pocatello, 7 p.m. The Bengals are the Big Sky coaches' preseason favorite to win the league title. On Saturday night, MSU will host its annual Shake Shroyer match at 7 p.m., against Montana. The contest will kick off the Brawl of the Wild series between the two storied rivals. The first 500 fans through the door will receive a free T-shirt.
'CAT CHAT:
The Bobcats went 0-3 at the DISH Lady Vol Classic at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. MSU opened the tournament with a 25-22, 26-24, 25-27, 25-18 loss to Austin Peay. Sophomore Kennadie Clute paced the Bobcats with 21 kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Loni Kreun also posted a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. Last Saturday, Memphis handed Montana State a 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 setback. Kreun posted a team-high nine kills, while junior outside hitter Eli Svisco added eight kills, five digs and two blocks. In its final contest at the tournament, the Lady Vols recorded a straight set 25-17, 25-15, 25-23 win over the Bobcats. MSU was paced by Clute with a match-high 15 kills, while Kreun and Kasey Schlatter led the Bobcats defensively with ten digs, apiece. For the weekend, MSU hit .147.
SCOUTING THE BENGALS/GRIZ:
Idaho State is 6-7 overall heading into Thursday's Big Sky opener against Montana State. ISU has rattled off three straight victories and have won four of its last five contests. Picked to win the league in the preseason coaches' poll, the Bengals have been led by Tressa Lyman, who averages 3.44 kills and 2.62 digs per set, along with setter Hayley Farrer, who dishes out 10.26 assists per game, while posting 2.20 dps. Montana, who will be looking for its first win of the season at Weber State on Thursday night, is currently 0-12 overall. UM has gone to five sets in four matches this fall, coming up short on each occasion. The Griz are led by Michelle Robinson, who averages 2.43 kills and 1.59 digs per set, and Claire McCown, who averages 2.18 kps.
BITS AND PIECES:
The Bobcats found the early going tough in terms of kills and scoring points as they were without its top two offensive players from last fall for most of the preseason. MSU got a lift last weekend as sophomore Kennadie Clute returned to the line-up. The Spokane, Washington product totaled 38 kills, averaging 3.80 per game. Clute notched 21 kills against Austin Peay and added 15 more against Tennessee. Last year, the 6-1 outside hitter led the Big Sky Conference in kills and points...Middle blocker Natalee Godfrey returned to the starting rotation after missing 30 sets...she played her first significant minutes since the opening weekend with four kills and two blocks against Tennessee...true-freshman Jolie Meade has been a nice surprise over the past four weeks. The native of Rocklin, California is fourth in the Big Sky Conference and tops on the Bobcat squad hitting .349 from the field. The mark also ranks 101st in the nation and is the 12th best attack mark in the nation by a first-year player.
LOVING LONI:
Sophomore outside hitter Loni Kreun has picked up where she left off last fall, both offensively and defensively. The Davis, California product leads the Bobcats with 109 kills, averaging 2.53 per outing. In addition, Kreun is second on the team in digs with 106, averaging 2.47 saves per set. On the season, she has posted four double-doubles, including 13 kills and 15 digs vs. Austin Peay.
DISHING THE ROCK:
For the third straight season the Bobcats have a different face at the setting position. Sophomore Katie Harrington transferred into Montana State during spring semester from the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The 6-foot product of Millersport, Ohio is averaging 8.93 assists per game. Harrington dished out a season-high 47 assists in Montana State's five-set win over Canisius. In addition, she is averaging .33 kps, while hitting .182 from the floor.
