CBS analyst addresses Bobcats fans, players
Brian Fish knew that building the Montana State men's basketball into a program that matches fits his vision and history would take collaboration, along with time and effort.
On Tuesday, that message was seconded by an old friend.
"The first thing is, you have to have a guy who understands the process of building," CBS college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb said during a visit to Bozeman. "You can't say, 'We just need players,' or 'We just need support,' or 'we just need facilities.' You need all of that. But I also think a big part of winning at a place like Montana State is letting others in, letting others be a part of the process and get to know you."
Nearly 100 Bobcat fans gathered at the Baxter Hotel in Bozeman Tuesday to meet Gottlieb and interact with Fish, who in his brief time at MSU has traveled across the state and throughout the Bozeman community in an effort to build support. That will remain, he said, a priority.
"Any time you can talk about your program, any time us coaches can be around more people that have a chance to get involved with our 6th Man Club, or Montana State basketball in general, that's good," Fish said. "Giving fans a chance to hear basketball from a guy they see on TV and from a different perspective is great."
Bobcat fans heard Gottlieb opine on plenty of topics. He offered thoughts on the NBA's one-and-done rule as it affects college basketball, Thursday's NBA Draft, college and professional basketball rules, and proper usage of social media by college student-athletes. He also visited with Bobcat Basketball campers and members of the Montana State football and men's basketball teams.
Gottlieb also disclosed that Fish, his friend of two decades, doesn't fish. Nor does he hunt or ski. "I'm not sure what he's doing in this beautiful place," Gottlieb laughed.
