Saturday marks rivarly meet and Senior Day
| Tentative Meet Schedule |
Montana State Track and Field hosts their second and final outdoor meet of the 2014 season and they're doing it in the best way possible. The Cat-Griz Dual marks one of the most anticipated meets of the season, highlighting one of the greatest rivalries in college history. The meet is slated for an 11 a.m. start with the field events and 12:40 p.m. for the running events.
MSU had a strong weekend of competition back on April 19, when they traveled to California and will look to keep up the momentum as they return to the Bobcat Track and Field Complex. Following last week's performances, the Bobcats have 48 Big Sky qualifying performances with an additional 39 on the brink of punching their ticket to Flagstaff, Ariz. for the Big Sky Conference Championships running May 14-17.
There should be several events featuring top-notch Big Sky competition, including any head-to-head with Montana's Lindsey Hall and Austin Emry. Amber Amsbaugh is ranked just below Hall in the high jump and should surely be a great contest. Races between junior Chantel Jaeger and UM's Kourtney Danreuther have also ignited this season and could provide serious points for either team. On the men's side, Jake Mushaben could face off with Emry in the long jump. Mushaben currently leads the conference with a distance of 23-08.75. Tanner Gambill, who once led the standings in the league, was bested by Griz thrower Lukas Scherer last week for the top spot. Gambill has measured a liftime best throw of 207-10.
"We are getting down to crunch time at this point," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "We only have two more weeks of competition after Saturday before the Conference meet and each race, each throw, each jump needs to count. In addition to getting down to the wire, this meet is one our favorites, for obvious reasons and the fact that is really brings out the team aspect of this seemingly individualized sport. To have it here in Bozeman also gives us a little extra motivation to go out there and compete."
Last year, the Bobcat men lost by only two points to the Griz, 101-99, in a meeting that came down to the final race of the day. Montana leads the men's series, 55-24, dating back to 1906. The Griz women also beat the Bobcats in 2013 by a score of 104-92. The all-time record dates back to 1983 with UM leading, 16-14.
In addition, the meet serves at Senior Recognition Day for the Bobcats. The recognition ceremony will take place at approximately 11:45 a.m. following the national anthem.
