Bobcats fall at Sacramento State in season finale
Montana State's 2013-14 season ended Saturday night the way it began back in November, with a loss of more than 20 points to a school from California. Sacramento State beat the Cats 84-59 to drop MSU from contention for the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
In punching its own ticket to the league tournament, Sacramento State made 15 baskets more than MSU. That came largely on the strength of out-rebounding the Bobcats by 11 (41-to-30) and forcing seven more turnovers (13 for the Bobcats, just six by Sac State).
Sacramento State's sensational backcourt of Dylan Garrity and Mikh McKinney combined for 31 points, 10 assists and four steals against just two turnovers. Five Hornets scored at least 10, while three Bobcats – Terrell Brown with 15, Flavien Davis with 12, and Paul Egwuonwu with 10 – hit for double-figures. Egwuonwu notched a double-double, matching Jordan Salley for a game-high 10 boards.
Sacramento State got the jump on MSU early. With the Bobcats leading 8-7 six minutes into the game, Sac State used a 13-2 run to gain control it would never relinquish. A Calen Coleman layup at 6:53 drew MSU within seven, but eight straight Hornet points were part of a half-closing 15-5 run that gave the Hornets a 38-21 halftime lead.
Montana State finishes the season 14-17 overall, 9-11 in Big Sky play. The Bobcats miss the league tournament for the first time since 2004.
