* The Montana State basketball team will look to break a five-game skid when it hosts North Dakota on Thursday night at 7 p.m., and Northern Colorado on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Both games will be held in Worthington Arena. Thursday's game against UND will be MSU's Play 4Kay contest. The annual Play 4Kay game gives coaches and student-athletes around the country the opportunity to "come together as one" to raise awareness for breast cancer research. In her 34-year tenure at No. Carolina State, Yow became the first coach to win two Olympic gold medals, guided her teams to 20 NCAA Tournaments and was inducted into 11 Halls of Fame. She founded the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in 2007 before passing away in 2009 after her 22-year battle with breast cancer. More than $3.8 million has been raised to support women's cancer research.
* The Bobcats enter Thursday night's game in seventh place in the Big Sky Conference standings, a half-game in front of Northern Colorado and a half-game back of a fourth-fifth-sixth place log-jam that would include the final tournament spot as six make the Big Sky's postseason dance. Montana State will look to restore its early Big Sky season success when it knocked off North Dakota in Grand Forks on Jan. 18. The Bobcat victory marked UND's only home loss of the season. North Dakota sits atop the league standings with an 11-2 mark. Its other Big Sky loss came at Sacramento State.
* The Bobcats hold a 5-3 lead in its all-time series with North Dakota. MSU has also captured five of the last six meetings and have never lost to UND in Worthington Arena.
* Montana State won the first game between the two schools this season on Jan. 18 in Grand Forks. MSU rallied from a nine-point first half deficit to record a 76-65 win. Jackie Elliott and Jasmine Hommes each recorded 18 points, while Ashley Brumwell added 14 and Kalli Durham 12. Elliott and Hommes each pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the double-double. UND was paced by Makailah Dyer, who came off the bench for 20 points. North Dakota connected on 24-37 free throws, while MSU finished 16-20 from the charity stripe.
* North Dakota and Montana State are Nos. 1 and 2 in Big Sky Conference games in rebounding offense. UND has pulled down 587 (45.2) rebounds, while MSU has logged 470 boards. However, on the defensive end, UND remained No. 1 giving up 414 rebounds (31.8), while the Bobcats are last in the league giving up 524 boards (43.7 ppg).
* During its six-game Big Sky Conference winning streak, Montana State owned a +0.2 advantage under the glass. In its five-game losing streak, MSU has been out-rebounded by 11.0 boards per contest.
* North Dakota has the top two rebounders in the Big Sky Conference as Madi Buck and Mia Loyd averaged 8.8 and 8.2 rpg, respectively. Jackie Elliott paces MSU at 7.0 rpg.
A FULL PLATE:
Ashley Brumwell has a lot on her plate. In addition to her playing gig, the 5th-year senior just completed a student-teaching stint in the math department at Bozeman High and received her undergraduate degree. Brumwell (formerly Albert) notched a career-high 26 points in MSU's win over Eastern Washington on Jan. 11. Last weekend, she posted 14 points and seven rebounds against Eastern Washington. She is currently 2nd on MSU's all-time career blocks chart with 122 swats.
SHE'S A KICK:
Jackie Elliott was held to just 8 points on the weekend, but did average 5.5 rebounds in the two games, including seven at Portland St. In Big Sky action, she is averaging 11.3 points and 7.0 boards, while shooting 46 percent per contest. Elliott, who was the 2010-11 Montana Gatorade Soccer Player of the Year, and a 16-time All-State Academic pick as a prepster, is majoring in mechanical engineering.
FROM THE TOWN THAT MADE VIOLET BEAUREGARDE FAMOUS:
Miles City product Kalli Durham, who has strong family ties to Montana State (grandfather Lin, Uncle Mick and cousin Casey played for the Bobcat men's team), was held to single-digit scoring in both games last weekend. The daughter of former UM-Western Athletic Director and men's basketball coach Mark Durham, she has been in double-digits in 11 games this winter. Durham has recorded 35 career double-figure scoring games in three seasons. Last week, she averaged 5.5 ppg.
ALL IN THE FAMILY:
Jasmine Hommes has started all 21 games and is averaging 13.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Against Southern Utah, Hommes posted a career-best 24 points on Jan. 30. Last weekend, she averaged 17.5 points per game- with 20 at Eastern Washington. In Big Sky play, Hommes is averaging 15.2 ppg. She also has strong ties to the MSU women's basketball program. She is the niece of former MSU and Big Sky MVP Blythe Hommes-Hintz and former MSU and All-Big Sky performer Brooke Hommes-Svendsen. Hommes' aunts made a combined 130 starts for MSU.
BABY TALK:
After taking last year off on maternity leave, Ausha Cole has returned to the Bobcat line-up. Cole has been in double-digits in six games, including 12 points at UM. Cole is 3rd in the Big Sky averaging 5.3 assists per game. Her current assist/turnover ratio in BSC play is third-best in the league at +2.0. On a side note, her biggest fan and daughter, Kadence, celebrated her first birthday on Nov. 19, 2013.
DAWK AND STOCK:
Alexa Dawkins has done a nice job coming off the bench this season. The former Bozeman High product is averaging 5.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in league play. Her 10 rebounds at Portland State on Saturday were a career-high. Lindsay Stockton averaged 15 minutes of action last weekend and recorded 13 points and nine assists. She had 10 points at EWU. Stockton recorded a Big Sky season-high 14 points against Weber State on Jan. 23. Lindsay is the daughter of legendary NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, while Dawkins' father Dale played football on the University of Miami's 1987 National Championship team. Dawkins later went on to play wide receiver for the New York Jets from 1990-93.
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS:
Redshirt freshman Margreet Barhoum is averaging 14.6 minutes per game coming off the bench in Big Sky action. Against Portland State, she registered a career-high 13 points, which included three 3-pointers and a 4-4 effort from the free throw line. The Edmonds, Wash., recorded a career-high six assists in MSU's win over Portland State in Worthington Arena on Jan. 9. Barhoum is currently tied for third on the squad with Jackie Elliott with 15 three-pointers to date.
DeNOTE ON DeWIT:
Montana State forward Kayla DeWit matched a career-high 10 points against Southern Utah on Jan. 30, which included a 6-of-6 performance from the free throw line. Her 4.0 rebound average is sixth best on the team. DeWit hauled down a team-high nine rebounds in MSU's loss at Montana on Feb. 3. On the season, DeWit is averaging 11.9 minutes of action as well as 4.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 42 percent from the field and 88 percent at the line.
REDSHIRTING:
Sophomore Peyton Ferris, who averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 rebounds last winter, will redshirt the 2013-14 campaign, according to MSU head coach Tricia Binford. Already on redshirt is junior college transfer and guard Michelle Seitz.
