“We had a great start against a potential top 25 team,” MSU Head Coach Tricia Binford said. “We lost a little bit of us once WSU made their first run and we couldn’t manage to get over the hump and get the lead back into single digits.”
The Montana State women's basketball team got out to the start it was looking for; however, Washington State used a 9-0 run at the midway mark of the opening stanza and cruised to an 82-61 win, Saturday afternoon in Beasley Coliseum.
"We had a great start against a potential top 25 team," MSU Head Coach Tricia Binford said. "We lost a little bit of us once WSU made their first run and we couldn't manage to get over the hump and get the lead back into single digits."
Montana State (6-5) took its largest lead of the game at the 14:53 mark of the first half as Lindsay Stockton found Jasmine Hommes for a 10-5 advantage. With the score tied at 18-all with 9:29 left in the opening stanza, the Cougars made its run and entered intermission with a 44-30 cushion.
The Bobcats cut the lead to 10-points on a couple of occasions in the final period, but would get no closer.
"We had some sparks of terrific team defense in the second half, but weren't able to convert against their size and speed, which forced higher turnovers than we are used to."
MSU committed 25 turnovers, which resulted in 28 Washington State (8-2) points.
Once again, Hommes paced the Bobcats with 21 points, her seventh game over the 20-point plateau this season. Freshman Delany Junkermier converted three 3-pointers for nine points and Peyton Ferris finished with eight points.
For the game, MSU shot 36 percent from the field, while WSU hit at a 44 percent clip. The Cougars held a slight 45-40 edge under the boards. The Bobcats were led under the glass by Ferris and Jackie Elliott with eight rebounds, apiece.
"I really liked our progression as a team this preseason against a very formidable schedule," Binford said. "This group has a ton of potential as we keep working to get better. Now it's a brand new season with conference."
MSU will open Big Sky Conference play on Jan. 1 at North Dakota.
