MSU looks for sustained effort and execution
The results haven't been what he's after, but first-year Montana State basketball coach Brian Fish is pleased with his team's effort through his team's first two games.
"We're not playing well at times," Fish said, "but we're playing hard. That's a good thing. If the effort continues, we'll get things accomplished."
The Bobcats' next opportunity to fuse effort with execution is Wednesday night, when MSU visits Cal State Northridge. Tipoff is at 8 pm MT.
One area the Bobcats have been held their own is on the glass, where the team has been out-rebounded only 69-to-66 through two games. Since halftime of the opener at UCLA, MSU's rebounding margin is actually +7. "We've been pretty good on the boards," Fish said. "I like the way we're battling there."
One player who has performed well so far is junior forward Danny Robison. The Billings West product averages 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while averaging over 30 minutes a game. Freshman forward Zach Green played well on Monday at Grand Canyon, getting 11 points, four rebounds and two steals, while junior Marcus Colbert draws praise from Fish for his play at the point.
Fish says his team's ability to sustain effort and put together efficient performances from all five players on the floor will be a main marker of success going forward. "We've had different freshmen step up at times in the first two games," he said. "That's been positive. We just need to put it all together."
