Bobcat Women’s Basketball Team Preparing for 2014-15 Campaign

“We’re getting better every day,” Binford said. “The players are picking things up quickly and we’re moving forward very efficiently.”
Two weeks into its fall drills 10th-year Montana State head coach Tricia Binford likes what she sees in her women's basketball team.
"We're getting better every day," Binford said. "The players are picking things up quickly and we're moving forward very efficiently."
Binford returns eight letterwinners, including four starters from last year's team that went 15-15 overall. Three seniors – Ausha Cole, Kalli Durham, and Jackie Elliott - will be asked to carry the load in the early going.
"We're getting great leadership," Binford said. "Our upper-classmen is inspiring the new kids and there is accountability."
Junior Jasmine Hommes, who started all 30 games last winter, returns as MSU's leading scorer, after pouring in 13.7 points per contest. On Monday, Hommes was named to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Big Sky Conference Second-Team.
"Jasmine has really matured into her role on the team," Binford said. "She is one of the top post players in the league and is really playing at a high-level the past two weeks."
Binford also boasts quality depth heading into the season, especially at the guard spot. "To see Ausha and Lindsay (Stockton) challenging each other, picking up the new concepts and bringing along (freshman) Hannah Caudill is exciting. I really like their energy and this year we will be giving them more ownership at the position."
Also returning for the Bobcats will be Alexa Dawkins, Margreet Barhoum and Peyton Ferris, who sat out last season as a redshirt.
Newcomers include Michelle Seitz, who sat out last season after transferring from Walla Walla Community College, along transfer, Riley Nordgaard, who will sit out the 2014-15 campaign after moving to MSU from Augustana College.
Amy Davis, a Bozeman product that originally signed with Idaho State but returned to attend Montana State last year, will have freshman status for the Bobcats. Other true-freshmen include Caudill, Delany Junkermier, Ashton Siegner and Haley Blodgett.
Before the exhibition opener against Carroll College on Nov. 1, Binford has her mind set on defense. "The three keys we need to drill are matching up in transition, giving our opponents no direct line to the basket and making contact on the box-out."
Binford will get her first real look at the Bobcats in the annual Blue/Gold scrimmage, which will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 4:45 p.m. in Worthington Arena. Scheduled to play against MSU will be former standouts Sarah Balian and Ashley Brumwell, along with its men's scout team. The scrimmage is free and open to the public.
"We need to see where our cardio level is at in real-time play," Binford said. "It will also be nice to compete against someone other than ourselves."
