* The Bobcats return to the friendly confines of Worthington Arena on Thursday night to complete a three-game home stand. Montana State dropped a 74-63 decision in Shroyer Gym (volleyball venue) to Idaho State on Saturday afternoon, snapping MSU's six-game win streak. MSU is on an eight-game win streak in Worthington Arena, dating back to its 56-48 win on March 4, 2013, ironically, against Southern Utah - Thursday night's opponent.
* With its loss to Idaho State on Saturday, Montana State slips 1/2 game back of North Dakota for the top spot in the Big Sky Conference. Southern Utah, Sacramento State and Montana lurk one game back in third place with 5-3 BSC marks.
* Southern Utah is a much improved squad this season, recording an 11-6 overall record and a 5-3 league slate. MSU enters 11-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play. The Thunderbirds have dropped its three Big Sky games by an average of 4.7 points, while MSU has lost its two league contests by an 11.5 point difference.
* The Bobcats saw its string of shooting 50 percent or better in the second half snapped against Idaho State. The Bengals held Montana State to 32 percent in the final twenty minutes. MSU entered the ISU contest shooting a combined 53 percent (66-124) in the final stanza of its last four games (EWU, UNC, UND, WSU).
* Montana State holds a 12-2 advantage in its all-time series with Southern Utah going back to its first meeting on Nov. 29, 1988 - a 76-52 Bobcat win in Worthington Arena. The Bobcats have won the last eight contests with the Thunderbirds, including a sweep of SUU, last winter.
* Montana State is second in the Big Sky Conference scoring 73.8 points per game, while SUU is next in line at 73.5 points per contest. SUU is giving up 68.6 points per game, and the Bobcats 71.3 ppg.
* Senior Ashley Brumwell is 112 rebounds shy of becoming just the third Bobcat in history to notch 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 100 blocks. Already in the prestigious club are Sarah Balian (1,441/760/163) and Nubia Garcia (1,025/701/105). Brumwell currently has 1,049 points, 588 rebounds and 118 blocks.
* The Bobcats lead the Big Sky Conference in 3-point field-goal percentage defense, allowing its opponents to shoot just 29 percent from beyond the arc. However, last Saturday, Idaho State shot 47% from behind the line.
* Southern Utah survived a last-second shot to hold on for a 62-61 win over visiting Eastern Washington on Saturday. The Thunderbird defense held the Big Sky's best 3-point shooting team to four makes on 19 attempts from behind the arc. SUU was also able to turn 18 offensive rebounds into a 16-3 advantage on second chance points to wrap-up its four-game conference home stand with a record of 3-1. Hailey Mandelko scored 15 points to lead four Thunderbirds in double figures.
* Sophomore forward Lori Parkinson ranks third in the Big Sky with a 53.5 percent field goal percentage. That number puts her among the top-50 marks in the nation.
* Southern Utah set a school record with 74 total rebounds and 39 offensive rebounds in its 101-44 victory over Arizona Christian. The new rebounding mark broke a 35-year old record set against the former Dixie College in 1978.
* Parkinson and Carli Moreland lead SUU in scoring at 12 and 10.7 points, respectively.
A FULL PLATE:
Ashley Brumwell has a lot on her plate. In addition to her playing gig, the 5th-year senior just completed a student-teaching stint in the math department at Bozeman High and received her undergraduate degree. Brumwell (formerly Albert) notched a career-high 26 points in MSU's win over Eastern Washington on Jan. 11. Last weekend, the Hamilton product averaged 15.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She is currently 2nd on MSU's all-time career blocks chart with 118 swats.
SHE'S A KICK:
Jackie Elliott continued her stellar play averaging six points and 6.5 rebounds in MSU's two games, last weekend. In Big Sky action, she is averaging a respectable 12.9 points and 6.5 boards, while shooting 52 percent per contest. Elliott, who was the 2010-11 Montana Gatorade Soccer Player of the Year, and a 16-time All-State Academic pick as a prepster, is majoring in mechanical engineering.
FROM THE TOWN THAT MADE VIOLET BEAUREGARDE FAMOUS:
Miles City product Kalli Durham, who has strong family ties to Montana State (Grandfather Lin, Uncle Mick and cousin Casey played for the Bobcat men's team), averaged 14 points per game last weekend, and ran her current streak of double-digit outputs to seven. The daughter of a coach and former UM-Western Athletic Director (Mark Durham), she has been in double-digits in ten games. She has recorded 34 career double-figure scoring games in three seasons.
ALL IN THE FAMILY:
Jasmine Hommes has started all 17 games for MSU and is averaging 11.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Last weekend, she averaged 7.5 points and 3.5 rebounds, while shooting 54 percent from the field. In Big Sky Conference play, the Lynden, Wash., product is averaging 13.3 ppg. Hommes also has strong ties to the MSU women's basketball program. She is the niece of former Bobcat and Big Sky MVP Blythe Hommes-Hintz and former Big Sky All-Conference performer Brooke Hommes-Svendsen. Hommes' aunts made a combined 130 starts for the Bobcats.
BABY TALK:
After taking last year off on maternity leave, junior point-guard Ausha Cole has returned to the Bobcat starting line-up. Cole dished out 4.5 assists last weekend, while chipping in 6.5 points and 1.0 rebound per game. Her current assist/turnover ratio in BSC play is second-best in the league at +2.3. On a side note, her biggest fan and daughter, Kadence, celebrated her first birthday on Nov. 19, 2013.
DAWK AND STOCK:
Alexa Dawkins has done a nice job coming off the bench this season. The former Bozeman High product is averaging 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in league play. Her rebound total is fifth best on the squad. Lindsay Stockton averaged 17 minutes last weekend and averaged 8.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Stockton recorded 14 points in MSU's win over Weber State. The duo hail from strong athletic lineages. Lindsay is the daughter of NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, while Dawkins' father Dale played football on the University of Miami's 1987 National Championship team. Dawkins later went on to play wide receiver for the New York Jets from 1990-93.
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS:
Redshirt freshman Margreet Barhoum is averaging 13.1 minutes per game coming off the bench. Last weekend, she sparked the Bocbats averaging 7.0 points per game, which included nine points against Weber State. In addition, Barhoum pulled down two rebounds and had one assist.
