Soratos, Demorest named Big Sky Athletes of the Week
A strong first outing continues to reap benefits for Montana State Cross Country when the Big Sky Conference announced the Cross Country Athletes of the Week on Tuesday. Heather Demorest and Cristian Soratos earned the league honors for the first time in the sport after a huge opening weekend.
At the season-opening Bozeman Running Company Invitational, both senior harriers won their respective individual races. Soratos led things off in the men's 5-mile race and after make an early move to pursue the lead, never looked back. His time of 25:09 was eight seconds faster than his 2012 performance.
Soratos' victory was supplemented by MSU finishing with four of the top six spots, eventually leading to the overall team victory among 11 schools, including four other Big Sky Schools.
In the women's three-mile race, Demorest took off at the front of the pack and never wavered. She knocked off over 20 seconds from her 2012 time to finish in 17:16. The women finished second overall, in a field of 10 teams.
Both wins were the second individual cross country wins of both Soratos and Demorest's collegiate careers at Montana State.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday, Oct. 4, at the Montana Invitational hosted by the Grizzlies of Montana.
