Grosvenor's season comes to a close at NCAA Championships
Grant Grosvenor's sophomore season came to a close on Wednesday when he failed to advanced out of the semifinals of the 800 meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Racing at Historic Hayward Field, the sophomore from Mill Creek, Wash. competed at his first national championship meet. (Results)
He began the race in the back of the pack in the first of three heats at Oregon's impressive track and field complex. After shuffling around a bit in the opening half of the race, he began to make his signature push in the final 200 meters. Despite his heroic efforts, he was not able to catch up to the front and placed sixth overall in his heat with a time of 1:49.41.
Although he did not make it to Saturday's final, his finish does earn him a spot as a second team All-American
"Overall this was a very good season," said Grosvenor. "I was on the same page with coach and our training regimen and went further than I ever have. Naturally, I was hoping for more and getting a spot in the finals but there's still a lot to be happy about."
To advance to the finals, competitors must be one of the top two finishers in their heat or the next two fastest times overall. Grosvenor's time gave him a 12th place finish overall in the field of 24.
Wednesday's time marks his fourth sub-1:50 time in his preferred event.
"Grant did great," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "I think he has a lot to be proud of this year. He's only a sophomore so he's clearly not finished yet."
