Flavien Davis' 30 points not enought to boost Bobcats to win
Flavien Davis' 30 points wasn't enough, as Montana held off a furious Montana State comeback for a 71-68 win in Bozeman on Saturday.
After trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, the Bobcats closed the game with a 22-9 run and had two possessions to tie the score in the final minute. But Montana forced a turnover and a missed desperation shot to close out the victory.
“We didn't get a chance to draw it up” because the Bobcats were out of time outs, Huse said of his team's effort in the closing seconds. “At that point you just have to make a basketball play.”
Davis fueled Montana State's comeback, scoring 30 points on 11-for-13 shooting and a seven-for-eight night from the free throw line. He also grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists and logged a steal. Davis' frontcourt-mate Paul Egwuonwu also posted a productive night, scoring eight points with eight rebounds.
“Flavien picked the slack up tonight,” Huse said. “I thought he had a great game. Paul and Flavien have been catalysts for us.”
After a couple quick Bobcat buckets Montana asserted itself. With the Bobcats leading 6-4 the Grizzlies scored 12 straight points on the strength of two Spencer Coleman three-pointers. That remained a theme throughout the night. The Grizzlies hit 11 of their 22 three-point attempts, while connecting on just 14 of their 29 shots inside the arc. The Grizzlies maintained that lead throughout the first half, and led by 10 at intermission.
The Grizzlies played without two starters on Saturday, guard Will Cherry and forward Mathias Ward, each out with foot injuries. In their stead, Keron DeShields scored 17 points and spencer Coleman and Kareem Jamar each hit for 14.
Montana raised its record to 20-6 overall and 16-1 in the Big Sky, holding onto its one-game lead over Weber State. MSU falls to 10-16 on the year, 8-10 in the league.
