MSU loses in last Bracketbuster game ever played
Good riddance, Bracketbuster.
South Dakota used an 18-2 run late in the first half to erase an early Bobcat lead on its way to an 85-74 win over Montana State in a Ramada International Bracketbuster matchup on Sunday afternoon. This year is the last for the Bracketbuster series.
After Montana State scored the game's first 11 points and held that lead for the game's first 14 minutes, the visiting Coyotes used an 18-2 burst to take control of the game. USD center Trevor Gruis started the run with an and-one layup, then Tyler Flack scored on a three-pointer and a dunk to pull the Coyotes to within one. Three-pointers by Casey Kasperbauer and Brandon Bos, and a pair of Flack free throws, completed the run.
Bobcat coach Brad Huse lauded South Dakota's shooting while finding fault with his team's shot selection. “I thought we contributed to that with some really quick offensive possessions,” he said. “It's a demon of ours. We settle. We took 10 threes in the first half, and only took six in the second half and made more.”
Bos scored 21 points, including a dozen after halftime, to lead South Dakota's offense. MSU held Bos' backcourt-mate Juevol Myles, the team's leading scorer, in check from the floor. But Myles hit five-of-six from the free throw line to score 16 points, one more than his average. More to the point, he helped the nation's second-ranked free throw shooting team to a 21-for-24 effort from the line.
MSU's quick start, particularly on the defensive end, helped the Bobcats hold South Dakota to 49% shooting from the game, 42% in the first half. That opening 10 minutes, however, didn't hold. “I thought early on we definitely had a leg up but didn't sustain it,” Huse said. “We're probably a little fragile right now. When a team makes a run on us we're not necessarily answering it the right way.”
While each team turned the ball over a dozen times, Montana State's giveaways led to 23 South Dakota points. “They got some transition buckets,” Huse said, “and points off of turnovers. Turnovers were critical. We weren't clicking on all cylinders. During their run we didn't keep our poise, we didn't react the right way, and that's disappointing.”
Xavier Blount scored 16 points to lead the Bobcats, while Antonio Biglow scored 15 off the bench on 5-for-7 shooting. MSU finished the game shooting 46% from the floor, and hit seven of its 16 three-point tries.
The Bobcats hit the road for Thursday's conference contest at Southern Utah, before hosting Montana Saturday.
