Cross Country Announces 2013 Team Awards

Demorst, Polson sweep Bobcat Cross Country accolades
Montana State Cross Country announced their 2013 team awards this week and two Bobcats pulled in all the honors. Each season, the coaching staff doles out two awards each for the men's and women's cross country teams: the Top Gun Award and Most Improved.
Seniors Heather Demorest and Trevor Polson earned both awards after remarkable senior seasons. Heather Demorest closed out her career with her first appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Nov. 23 where she placed 58th in a field of over 250. She earned the Top Gun Award after finishing with a flawless power score 1, based on finishing in MSU's top slot in every meet of the 2013 season. In addition to her NCAA appearance, she also placed seventh at the NCAA Mountain Regional, runner-up at the Big Sky Championship and won two races as an individual to kick off the year.
Her Most Improved accolades were give following a 16th place finish at the Big Sky meet only one year ago and 37th at the NCAA Regional. She also came in 121st at the 2012 Pre-National Invitational and jumped up to 63rd in 2013.
This is the Darby, Mont. native's second consecutive season of receiving both awards.
"Heather produced not only her best season as a Bobcat but our highest finish at the NCAA meet since Jen Baylis's 32nd place preformance back in 1992," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "She earned these awards through all her hardwork and dedication to her team and her training and she's represented the University with class."
Polson also had a breaktout year for the Blue & Gold. He earned his first cross country award following a power score of 1.4. He ran in the team's first position in the Montana Invitational and the Big Sky Championships and and in second at the BRC Invitational, Pre-Nationals and the NCAA Mountain Regionals.
His ninth place finish at the Big Sky meet marked his first all-conference nod for cross country and notably jumped 23 spots from his 32nd place just one year ago. He also came in 41st at the Regional meet this fall after placing 70th his junior year. His power score also improved from 4.2 to 1.4 in one year.
"Trevor Polson's season represented one of the most dramatic seasons of improvement during my 31 years of coaching at Montana State," said Kennedy. "Both Heather and Trevor showed true leadership for our best team finishes in the past decade and their commitment to this program and to their role as student-athletes is second-to-none."
