Montana State senior Ashley Brumwell began her 2013-14 basketball season on a high-note as the 6-1 forward from Hamilton poured in 25 points on 10-13 from the field, including three 3-pointers as the Gold squad posted a 90-51 victory over the Blue, Friday night in Worthington Arena.
The Gold team featured the current Bobcat roster, while the Blue squad was comprised of alumni, including three-time All-Big Sky Conference performer Rachel Semansky, along with its men's scout team.
Also scoring in double-figures for Gold were Alexa Dawkins 12, Emily Allen 11 and freshman-redshirt Margreet Barhoum 11.
"We were a little fumbly in the first half," said ninth-year head coach Tricia Binford. "Once we settled in to what we wanted to accomplish, I'm happy with our effort. We had good balance and I was pleased with the way we moved the ball."
The Gold team broke away from a nine-point advantage at halftime, out-scoring Blue 50-20 in the second stanza. Eight of 10 Bobcat players scored six points or more as MSU shot a blistering 59 percent from the game.
Defensively, MSU pulled down 29 rebounds. Sophomore Kayla DeWit paced the Bobcats under the glass with a team-high five boards. Junior Kalli Durham and Brumwell each dished out five assists, while Barhoum and Dawkins each chipped in four steals.
"We certainly have plenty to work on, especially on the defensive end," Binford said. "This is a good starting point and a gauge to see where we are at this point in the preseason."
MSU will play its first exhibition game of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. against the University of Great Falls.
