HITTING THE I-15 CORRIDOR:
The Montana State volleyball team will head down the I-15 corridor this weekend for a pair of Big Sky Conference road matches. The Bobcats will begin play on Friday, Oct. 4 at Idaho State in Pocatello. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start in Reed Gym. MSU will complete weekend play at Weber State on Saturday, Oct. 5 against Weber State in Ogden, Utah. The match will start at 7 p.m. in Swenson Gym.
ABOUT THE BOBCATS:
Montana State will look to snap its five-match losing streak and garner its first Big Sky Conference win of the season when it travels to Idaho State and Weber State this weekend. MSU dropped a pair of league contests last weekend at Eastern Washington (3-2) and Portland State (3-1). MSU's four conference losses were at the hands of teams picked 1, 3, 4 and 6 in the preseason Big Sky Coaches poll. The upswing of the four setbacks is taking at least one set off each team and being competitive in all four matches. For MSU to find success, they'll need to improve its attack percentage (.153), while limiting their opponents' hitting percentage (.252). The Bobcats will also need to shore things up on the defensive end, as well, including digs (11.12 dps) and blocks (1.82 bps). Montana State's highest team rank in Big Sky action is seventh in both kills (11.71 kps) and assists (11.06 aps). Individually, Bobcat freshman Kennadie Clute continues to raise eyebrows around the Big Sky, averaging a league-best 4.41 kills and 5.21 points per contest. Also ranked among the top 10 in league play is freshman setter Anna Sykora, who is listed sixth dishing out 9.65 assists per set.
THE SCOUTING REPORT:
Idaho State (8-7, 2-2) split a pair of league matches last weekend, defeating Northern Colorado (3-0), before dropping a 3-1 decision to North Dakota. The Bengals are paced by sophomore Tressa Lyman, who is averaging 3.87 kills per set. ISU senior setter Lori Mendenhall-Lee is averaging a Big Sky best 10.83 assists per contest. Idaho State holds a 34-31 advantage in the all-time series dating back to the 1978 season. Weber State (5-13, 1-3) will face Montana on Friday. MSU's all-time series with WSU is knotted at 32-32.
FAB FROSH, PART I:
Kennadie Clute, a 6-1 outside hitter from Spokane, continues to be Montana State's top offensive threat, racking up a Big Sky Conference best 265.5 points in the first 15 matches of the season. In addition, the graduate of Mt. Spokane High School has been in double-figure kills in all 15 matches. She is ranked first in the league averaging 4.02 kills per set and her 28 kills against North Dakota last weekend is the top mark in the Big Sky, as well. Defensively, Clute is averaging 2.16 digs per set.
GOOD GODFREY:
Sophomore Natalee Godfrey put together a solid start to the season for the Bobcats, hitting a team-best .243 from the field, while averaging 1.84 kills and .69 blocks per set. Last weekend, the native of Eugene, Ore., posted 14 kills, averaging 1.56 kps and 1.00 blocks per set.
FAB FROSH, PART II:
Freshman Anna Sykora also continued her hot-hand. The 5-11 setter from Rapid City, SD, dished out 79 assists last weekend and is averaging 10.10 assists per set. The mark is 3rd best in the Big Sky Conference. Sykora is also averaging 1.74 digs per contest.
THE BUTCHER, THE BAKER, THE DIG-MAKER:
Senior libero Nicole Baker averaged 2.78 digs per set last weekend and ranks 8th in the Big Sky. She is 8th in aces.
FAB FROSH, PART III:
Freshman outside hitter Loni Kreun has posted a strong start to the season. The 6-0 native of Davis, Calif., is averaging 3.16 kills per set, which is 6th in the Big Sky Conference. Kreun is second on the team with 206 points scored. In addition, she is second on the squad, averaging 2.33 digs per set. Last weekend at Eastern Washington and Portland State she averaged 2.56 kills and 2.22 digs per game.
