Seniors cap off careers with one more award
The Big Sky Conference announced the 2012 Scholar Athlete Award winners on Wednesday. Montana State student-athletes, Katie Bussey, of Women's Basketball and Asa Staven, of Track and Field, received the honors for their efforts not only on their playing fields but also in the classroom. Bussey closed out a tremendous career with the Bobcats this spring, as a unanimous First-Team All-Big Sky Conference selection this season, she averaged 17.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. In addition, Bussey became the Big Sky Conference's all-time career leader in three-point field-goals with 254 makes and tied the league mark for most points in a game with 41 in MSU's overtime win at Idaho State on Feb. 2.
Most notably, Bussey earned Honorable Mention All-American recognition for the 2011-12 season, the first Bobcat take the honors since 1997.
A native of Alamosa, Colo., she finished second on MSU's all-time scoring chart with 1,710 points. In addition, she ranks in the top ten of 11 Bobcat career statistical categories.
She is a four-time Big Sky All-Academic selection with a degree in kinesiology and was on the Dean's List for five semesters. Bussey recently signed with the Probuild Lions, a professional women's basketball team in the Netherlands.
Staven also recently closed out a very strong career with the Bobcats. The Georgetown, Texas native put together a senior season worthy of the record books. At the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, he won the heptathlon with a score of 5,731, which not only set a new Bobcat program record, but also a Big Sky Conference mark. He broke his own program record of 5,691that he set earlier in the season at the Mountain States Games.
In addition to his heptathlon results, he placed fifth in the high jump and long jump and sixth in the pole vault and eventually went on to be named the meet's Outstanding Men's Performer.
After winning the heptathlon at the Big Sky Meet, Staven went on to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships but had to withdraw due to injury.
Staven placed second in the decathlon at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships and then went on to compete in five other events, including contributing to the fourth-place 4x400 relay.
Off the track, Staven is a three-time Big Sky All-Academic selection and has spent four semesters on the Dean's List and one on the President's List. He was also a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and represented MSU at the National SAAC Meetings in San Diego.
Student-athletes were selected by their respective institutions based upon athletic and academic performance during the 2011-12 school year. To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale), be a member of the graduating class and/or have completed their last year of intercollegiate athletic eligibility, have completed at least two years of intercollegiate competition at the institution, and be a letterwinner.
