Montana State women’s basketball standout Katie Bussey celebrated her 22nd birthday in style, scoring a game-high 23 points as a team of United States collegiate all-stars defeated Team Australia 90-58 on Thursday night in Zhongxian, China.
Montana State women's basketball standout Katie Bussey celebrated her 22nd birthday in style, scoring a game-high 23 points as a team of United States collegiate all-stars defeated Team Australia 90-58 on Thursday night in Zhongxian, China.
The Zhongxian tournament is the second of three that the USA all-stars are playing during their 10-day tour against China, Australia and New Zealand.
In the win over Australia, Bussey, a 5-9 guard from Alamosa, Colorado, connected on nine-of-12 from the field, including five 3-pointers.
“What a night for Katie,” said head coach Chris Denker, who formerly coached at Colorado State and Santa Clara. “She celebrated her birthday in grand style and just continues to get more comfortable with each game.”
For her efforts, Bussey was named to the Zhongxian All-Tournament team. Her 23 points was a tournament single-game high.
Teammate Rebekah Gardner (UCLA) was named tournament MVP after averaging 13 points and six rebounds in three games. Casey Garrison (Missouri State) also received all-tournament kudos, averaging 11 points, 3.3 steals and 2.0 assists, as did Rachael Hackbarth (Drake), who averaged 11 points and five rebounds in wins over Australia and New Zealand.
