Tom Gage Classic marks last chance meet for Bobcats
Their final chance has arrived. Montana State travels to Missoula, Mont., Friday, May 4, for the Tom Gage Classic. The Tom Gage Classic marks the final chance the Bobcats will have to qualify for the Big Sky Championships, which will be held in Bozeman in less than a week.
After a blustery and cold outing at the Cat-Griz Dual on April 28, where only three new qualifying performances took place, MSU is ready to capitalize at the last chance meet to make sure they've got a full roster.
“Each team can bring 25 athletes, and we still have some space left,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “The excitement of hosting Conference this year is one of the many things giving us the extra push and motivation to really perform well this season.”
The Bobcat Women have 21 athletes qualified, with many on the brink. Multi athletes, Carley McCutchen, Sarah McGree are already qualified in the heptathlon, but are just on the cusp in several events. McCutchen is close in the 100 hurdles, along with McGree and Chelsea Bourque. She will also look for marks in the high jump and long jump. McGree also sits on the descending order list but needs official marks in the long jump and the javelin.
Adess Durglo, who is has seen much improvement in her inaugural season, will look for big jumps in the triple jump and high jump and try to qualify for her first outdoor championship meet.
In the throws, Karen Brown needs just .30 meters to make it in the javelin for her final season of competition. Loni Havlovick is just .45 off in the discus.
The Bobcat men also have 21 who have gotten their Big Sky marks. Freshman Kevin Close, who hails from the Gallatin Valley, will each look to find a spot on the Big Sky roster. Close is on the descending order list in the 100 and 400 and is tenths of a second off from qualifying in both. While already qualified in several events, Asa Staven is just on the brink in the 400, as well.
Powhatten Williamson, already set in the decathlon, will look for an individual event qualifier in the 110 hurdles.
“With the conference meet just a few days away, we're still where we need to be.” Kennedy said. “We're still gaining momentum and getting season bests. I expect good things at Dornblaser.”
In addition to meet host Montana, and the Bobcats, MSU Billings, Carroll, Great Falls, Rocky Mountain, Lewis-Clark State and Lethbridge, as well as unattached athletes, will be competing.
