MSU falls to Eastern Washington
Eastern Washington earned a 5-2 men's tennis decision over Montana State in Bozeman on Friday afternoon, but it will not long matter who won the match. The event served as the final home contest in the 12-year career of Bobcat coach Mike Phillips, along with seniors Lander Jewett of Helena and Alberto Fuentes.
In form true to Phillips' teams, three of which won Big Sky Championships, the Bobcats competed throughout the four-hour match. Montana State won the doubles point and Alberto Fuentes took a 6-4, 6-3 win over Mario Navarro, but Eastern swept the remainder of the singles matches to clinch the win. The Bobcats were hampered on the day by the loss of no. one singles player Niklas Brandes to injury.
“The guys fought hard, and I'm proud of them,” Phillips said. “We were short-handed, but it was hotly-contested.”
Schleuter, moving into the top spot on the singles ladder, dropped a narrow 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 decision to James Russell. Javier Martin-Morillas also dropped a three-set decision.
Montana State closes the 2012 season Sunday at Montana.
