MSU looks to end skid against red-hot Titans
Montana State heads to the Disneyland neighborhood this weekend, but Brad Huse knows the trip will be no vacation.
MSU Game Notes vs. Cal State Fullerton
“Cal State Fullerton is a very talented team, and we're catching them as they're really getting hot,” MSU's sixth-year head coach said. “This will be a great challenge for us.”
The Titans, a Big West entry, carry a four-game winning streak into Saturday's Sears Bracketbuster matchup, and have won seven of eight. Fullerton is 3-2 against teams that have beaten the Bobcats this season, 2-0 against Big Sky schools, and owns a 17-7 record this season. Montana State, on the other side of the coin, has lost six straight to watch its overall record fall to 11-14.
“Fullerton is very athletic and has good experience,” Huse said. “They have four starters from other Division I schools, and they're really starting to gel. The Big West is having a really good year, and Fullerton is right in the middle of the mix.”
D.J. Seeley, a 6-4 wing, and 6-7 forward Omondi Amoke, each transfers from Cal, lead the Titans. Seeley averages a team-high 17.0 points, while Akoke chips in 12.2 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds. San Francisco transfer Kwame Vaughn, a recent Big West Player of the Week after scoring 37 points against UC Santa Barbara, averages 16.5 points a game and leads the team with 4.0 assists an outing.
The Bobcats have a hot hand of their own entering the break from conference action. Sophomore wing Shawn Reid has followed performances of 16 (at Sac State) and 18 (at UNC) points with a career high 31 points in Wednesday's home loss to Weber State. He has raised his average to 10.1 points a game.
“Shawn has done a good job stepping up,” Huse said. “We need him to continue becoming more consistent, and we need to continue to tighten things up offensively. But we're looking for guys to make shots, and Shawn has done that lately.”
After Saturday's game at Fullerton, MSU begins preparation for next Saturday's Cat-Griz contest in Missoula.
