Rested Bobcats to compete in NCAA Mountain Regional
A few weeks off does the body good, both physically and mentally. The Montana State Cross Country teams saw performances all over the map at the Big Sky Championship in Flagstaff, Ariz. back on Oct. 27 and expectations are high as ever headed into the 2012 NCAA Mountain Regional Championship meet. (Complete Meet Information)
The meet, hosted by Colorado State, will take place in Fort Collins on Friday, Nov. 9. The Women's 6K race will begin at 12 p.m., followed by the Men's 10K at 1:15 p.m.
The Women's squad, who has faced the perils of youth over the course of the fall, will continue to grow and garner experience at the race. Heather Demorest has been the team's leader as a veteran and the highest finisher at each race in 2012. Most recently, she placed 16th at the Big Sky Championship, a duplication of her 2011 placing.
Also expected to gain valuable experience at the regional meet is Rachel Atwood who placed 26th at the Big Sky meet. With the remainder of the team finishing around the 50th place mark in Flagstaff two weeks back, head coach Dale Kennedy still sees many of the positives of championship-format meets like the Mountain Regional.
“Every time we get to race, we learn something,” said Kennedy. “We're a young team but they're learning how to race, how to compete and being pushed on the course, as individuals and as a team.”
On the men's side, depth has certainly been on the Bobcats' side in 2012. Cristian Soratos has been the frontrunner for Montana State in his rookie season and after a disappointing race at the Big Sky meet, he should be poised from another impressive finish. Most notably, he came in 25th at the Pre-National Meet in Louisville, Ky. on Oct. 13.
Michael Asay put together one of the best races of his career at Big Sky, placing 10th overall for his first all-conference nod and will look to capitalize on that momentum on Friday. Jacob Kirk and Seth Garbett also had strong performances last time out (placing 14th and 19th, respectively) and will be looked to for depth for MSU.
“I think it says a lot about the diversity of the men's team in terms of how we've been finishing the last few meets,” Kennedy said. “I feel very positive, as do the guys, about what could happen in Fort Collins.”
The Mountain region consists of men's and women's teams from the Mountain West, Western Athletic, Big Sky, Pac-12, Great West, West Coast, and Big 12 conferences. Twenty teams from the region will be competing. In 2011, the MSU men placed 13th, while the women came in 15th. Headed into the meet, the men are ranked 11th in the region, while the women are currently unranked. Colorado's men and Big Sky Conference member Weber State women are perched at the top of the region.
