The women's 6K race kicked off the day at Collindale Golf Course, followed by the men's 10K.
Heather Demorest, the steady leader for the Bobcat Women, finished 37th overall to lead the team to their 15th place finish (382 points) among 20 schools. Demorest jumped over 20 spots after finishing in 58th in 2011. She crossed the finish line in 21:35.70.
After Demorest, the youthful team ran seven athletes ranging from 73rd place to 118th. Transfer Megan Beam was the next finisher for MSU in 73rd place, with a time of 22:27.20, followed by freshman Rachel Atwood in 79th in 22:36.60. Classmate Rachel Sullivan was next in 93rd (23:03.30). Emily Garneau (100th; 23:14.90), Michelle Cline (110th; 23:34.30) and Taylor Rather (118th; 23:53.30) rounded out MSU's competitors. Garneau improved 18 spots from her freshman campaign performance.
The women earned 15th following a tie-breaker with New Mexico State. Big Sky Conference member Weber State won the team competition with 63 points and had two Wildcats placing in the top-10.
"Heather did great today," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "Collectively, we did the same as we did last year, placing 15th but I consider this a good thing considering all the adversity we've faced this season. These athletes have grown a lot in a short amount of time and there is tremendous potential in this group."
The Bobcat Men came in 12th as a team, one spot ahead of 2011 with 280 points. Michael Asay, who paced Montana State at the Big Sky Championship with an individual 10th place performance, placed 38th in Fort Collins and was the first in Blue and Gold to cross the line in Fort Collins. The transfer from New Mexico notched a time of 31:24.90.
Jacob Kirk was the second-highest finisher in 40th with a time of 31:27.80. Last year, Kirk finished 65th. Seth Garbett, who has seen tremendous improvement over the course of the season finished 46th in 31:35.40. Garbett notched the most impressive jump from season-to-season after crossing the line in 98th place just one year prior.
As one of Montana State's consistent competitors of the 2012 season, Trevor Polson paced himself to 70th place in 32:14.20.
Newcomers Cristian Soratos (86th; 32:55.60), Jakob Woodland (87th; 32:56.80) and Zachary Kughn (89th; 33:00.80) filled out the remainder of the roster in the race.
The Big Sky Conference was also represented by the men's champion with Northern Arizona winning the team title with 56 points.
"Our top three finishers had phenomenal races today," Kennedy said. "I think running the 10K is an eye-opener for a lot of these guys but the positives certainly outweighed the negative today."
