Pre-Nationals kicks off championship slate of 2012 season
It's the first of the “Big Three” meets and the Bobcats are ready.  After two weeks off from competition, Montana State Cross Country will return to the course on Saturday, Oct. 13, in Louisville, Ky. at the Pre-National Meet, hosted by Louisville. (Complete Meet Information)
The Pre-National Invitational marks the final meet before the Big Sky Conference Championship, which will take place two weeks later on Oct. 27 in Flagstaff, Ariz. Following the Big Sky meet is the NCAA Mountain Regional, the third of the three championship meets the Bobcats have on their radar.
“While we've been under the radar at this level,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “This meet gives us the chance to get on the national scene to see our progress and potentially surprise a few people along the way.”
The Bobcats will be competing among over 1,300 student-athletes, including 68 men's teams and 63 women's teams in both the seeded and unseeded races.
In the women's 6K race, MSU will seek to continue the momentum they've gained in the 2012 season. The youthful Bobcats are coming off team wins at both the Montana State and Montana Invitationals, and are currently ranked 10th in the Mountain Region.
The women's seeded race features eight teams in the NCAA, including the second-ranked Florida State and fourth-ranked Oregon.
Slated to compete for the MSU Women are Rachel Atwood, Megan Beam, Michelle Cline, Heather Demorest, Kaylee Schmitz, Rachel Sullivan and Heidi Turner.
Seven ranked men's programs will appear in the 8K race at Tom Sawyer State Park, also the venue for the 2012 NCAA Championship races, including the Mountain Region number one ranked Brigham Young program. MSU is ranked eighth in the same region as the Cougars.
Like the women, the men will seek another strong performance following their collective victory at the Montana Invitational on Sept. 28. After sweeping the first seven places, MSU's “Super Seven” are ready to sneak up on the competition and try to break through into the national spotlight.
Newcomer Cristian Soratos was the individual winner in Missoula a few weeks back and will be joined by Michael Asay, Seth Garbett, Jacob Kirk, Zach Kughn, Trevor Polson and Jakob Woodland.
“We're at a pretty crucial point of the season,” Kennedy said. “Our training changes a bit this week as we get into our last cycle. We're really monitoring our progress to make sure we're not 'de-conditioning' as we head into the 'championship' part of the season.”
The men's race is slated for a 9:30 a.m. EDT (7:30 a.m. Mountain), while the women should begin at 10:15 a.m.
