Top-25 finish highlights race in Louisville
The Montana State Cross Country squads' youth showed tremendous promise on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky. Sometimes that youth proved critics wrong, while on the other end, that youth was more about potential. (Men's Results | Women's Results)
In a meet featuring seven of the top-25 NCAA Division I cross country program, the Bobcat men stayed with the pack and put together a 21st place team finish among 40 teams, including the No. 3 Brigham Young squad who is also ranked first in the Mountain Region.
In the second consecutive meet, newcomer Cristian Soratos was the top finisher for the Bobcats with a very impressive 25th place finish in the Men's 8K race with a time of 23:50.60.
Jacob Kirk placed 112th overall in 24:35.60, with teammate Seth Garbett just behind him in 113th. Michael Asay clocked in with a time of 24:49.30, landing him in 147th. Jakob Woodland came in 152nd in 24:53.20. In 196th was Trevor Polson who finished with a time of 25:14.20. Rounding out MSU's “Super Seven” was Zach Kughn in 260th with a time of 26:22.40.
“Cristian certainly had a great run for us on the men's side,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “The men put together a very solid performance as a team and while we hoped to finished in the top half of the teams, there are a still a lot of great things that happened out on the course today.”
While the women didn't see the same success on paper as the men, the chance to compete at an elite level will be a big benefit for the future of the very young team. The Bobcats placed 38th, last place at Tom Sawyer Park among eight top-25 Division I programs.
Heather Demorest placed 121st overall and was MSU's top finisher with a time of 21:54.40 in the Women's 6K race. Freshman Rachel Atwood was the next highest finisher in 214th, clocking in with a time of 22:49.0. Another Bobcat freshman, Rachel Sullivan crossed the line in 23:00.30 for 229th, while Megan Beam took 242nd with 23:16.70. Transfer and Bozeman High product Heidi Turner finished with a time of 23:40.30, while fellow Bozeman Hawk Michelle Cline came in 256th in 24:09.90. Kaylee Schmitz closed out the Bobcat runners in 259th with a time of 24:15.70.
“This is a young team and I think there was a little bit of shock competing at this level,” Kennedy said. “This experience will definitely help us down the road and certainly provide even more motivation headed into the Big Sky Conference meet in a few weeks.”
Montana State will take another two week break from competition but their next time out will be a true test when they go to Flagstaff, Ariz. for the Big Sky Championship. The meet will take place on Oct. 27, at Buffalo Park and will be hosted by Northern Arizona.
