‘Cats look for more conference qualifiers
After a strong first week of indoor track and field, Montana State is ready to go again. The Bobcats will host the Montana State Open on Friday, Jan. 27, at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. Along with MSU, Carroll, Dickinson State (N.D.), Great Falls, Montana, MSU-Billings and Rocky Mountain, will be competing in Worthington Arena.
Montana State heads into the meet with 16 automatic qualifiers for the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 24-25.
Leading the way for the Bobcat Women is Amanda Murphy, who produced two first place finishes at the MSU Dual Meet Invite, just a week ago. Murphy's impressive wins in the weight throw and the shot put not only gave her two qualifiers to the conference meet, but a Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week nod, as well. Murphy will compete in the same events on Friday.
The women's sprint corps will also be a highlight again this week, after a very impressive debut at the MSU Duals. Newcomer Chantel Jaeger, coming off her first collegiate win in the 200 with a time of 25.14, will contest again in the 55, 200 and 400 meter dashes. Jaeger's time in the 200 ranks her third in the conference and is an automatic qualifying mark.
For the men, much of their depth is concentrated in the multis and the distance events. Jeff Mohl and Asa Staven have perched themselves at the top of the conference, as well as the nation. Mohl, who is currently ranked second in NCAA DI in the heptathlon, is ranked among the Big Sky top-10 in six different events, including a top place in the long jump and the heptathlon. The Red Lodge, Mont. native has a busy schedule on Friday, competing in the 200, 55 hurdles, pole vault and the long jump.
Staven, ranked third in the nation in the heptathlon, also has a full docket set. He'll face off in the 55 dash, 55 hurdles, pole vault, long jump and shot put. Staven is ranked in the top-10 in four events in the Big Sky, including first in the pole vault at 4.90m (16-00.75).
The men's distance races feature some Big Sky notables, as well. Dan Jackson, who won the mile at the MSU Duals, is ranked first in the conference with a time of 4:08.33. Jacob Kirk, after an exciting cross country season, is ranked second in the Sky at 4:08.88. Jackson and Kirk's times have secured them a place at the Big Sky Conference meet.
“Right now, we're looking to get some more automatic qualifiers for the conference meet,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “We've had a great start to the season, very solid, and we're going to continue to rise and better than we are right now.”
Both field and track events are slated for a 4:30 p.m. start. The Montana State Open will also feature the Little Bobcat 50-meter Dash at 6 p.m. Children 12 and under and invited to participate in the free event.
