MSU multis athletes start the season off strong
The Montana State Track and Field hepathletes and pentathletes opened the 2012 season at the MSU Combined Events Invitational in fine fashion. Featuring athletes from Montana and Montana State, it proved to be a strong first showing of the indoor season. (Men's Final Results | Women's Final Results)
After day one of the two-day meet, Jeff Mohl, who placed third in heptathlon at the 2011 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, led all competitors in the meet with 3,024 points. In the first four events (55m, long jump, shot put and high jump), Mohl placed first in all but the shot put.
Senior Asa Staven sat in second after the opening day with 3,000 points, after placed second in both the long jump and shot put and tying for first with Mohl in the high jump.
To close out day two, Mohl maintained the lead and earned his first win of the year with 5,521, a new lifetime best for the Red Lodge, Mont. native. His previous best was 5,290 set last season. Not only did he notch a new personal best, he also launched himself to the top of the records books. Staven was the previous record holder with 5,409.
In day two, Mohl finished first in the 55 hurdles and the 1,000 and came in second in the pole vault behind Staven.
Staven finished second overall, with 5,445 points, also a lifetime best for the senior.
Montana's top finisher was Terrell Boyes who came in fifth with 4,486 points.
For the women, Sarah McGree finished as the Bobcats' top finisher, sitting in second place behind Montana's Lindsey Hall. McGree put up 3,470 points. Behind McGree was Carley McCutchen with 3,274. Sadie McMillan, Kortnee Barrett and Adess Durglo rounded out the competition.
Hall was the only competitor for the Griz and finished with 3,783 points.
Montana State will run with a full squad on Friday, Jan. 20, at the MSU Dual Meet Invitational. Field events will begin at 4:30 p.m. and track events will comment at 5 p.m.
