Turnover Flu: Bobcat Rally Falls Short at Eastern Washington

Eastern Washington turned 28 Montana State turnovers into 34 points and held on down the stretch for a 79-73 win over the Bobcats, Thursday night in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.

Eastern Washington turned 28 Montana State turnovers into 34 points and held on down the stretch for a 79-73 win over the Bobcats, Thursday night in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.
Twenty-six of Eastern Washington's (7-7, 1-0) 44 first half points came off Montana State (8-5, 0-1) miscues to lift the Eagles to a 13-point advantage at intermission.
“We shot the ball well and rebounded well, but the turnovers just killed us,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We're disappointed with our performance, but we need to put it behind us and move on.”
EWU held a 13-point lead with seven minutes remaining, but MSU chipped away at the margin and pulled to within three points following an Ashley Albert 3-pointer with 3:06 left. A Chelsea Banis jumper with 1:09 remaining kept the Bobcats within striking distance; however the Eagles converted six free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
Albert and Katie Bussey led Montana State with 17 points each, while Banis also reached double-figures with 14 points.
For the game, MSU shot 47 percent from the field and out-rebounded EWU 41-35. MSU's 28 turnovers was its highest total of the season.
The Bobcats were led under the boards by Banis and Albert with nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Montana State also received a boost off the bench as Ausha Cole tallied nine points, while adding three assists and three steals.
EWU was paced by Brianne Ryan with 31 points and five rebounds.
MSU will play at Portland State on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. (MST) in the Stott Center.
