Montana State looks to gain gather steam from Monday's road win
Looking to capture momentum after Monday's road win at Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose State, Montana State returns to Worthington Arena Saturday night against Cal State Bakersfield. Tipoff is 7 pm.
The Bobcats beat SJSU 77-70 in San Jose on the strength of Jamie Stewart's 21 points, and look to slow down a Roadrunner team off to a 4-1 start with four straight victories. CSUB is paced by point guard Issiah Grayson, who leads the team with 14.2 points and 3.8 assists a game. Bakersfield has found success on the road, bringing a 3-1 mark away from home to Bozeman.
MSU's success on Monday came on the heels of back-to-back losses, to Seattle at home and at Idaho. Rod Singleton (12.2 points per game) leads a trio of Bobcats scoring over 10 points a game. Although the Bobcats have been an efficient offensive team, shooting 46% from the floor and turning the ball over only 12 times a game, MSU coach Brad Huse says his team continues searching for its identity.
“We're kind of figuring ourselves out right now,” Huse said. “We're in the mode of learning what kind of team we can become, what our strengths are. This is the time of year when you do that. We certainly want to win every game, but at the same time it's important to grow and adjust so we're playing our best basketball when the conference (season) starts.
“And we're right on pace,” Huse added.
Part of the process has been integrating talented new players into the system. After Singleton, a pair of new junior college transfers, former Henry Ford CC teammates Jamie Stewart and Christian Moon, average 10.5 each as part of a balanced Bobcat offense.
Saturday's game begins a four-game stretch against Big Sky opponents for Bakersfield, while the Bobcats remain at home for games against Willamette (Dec. 7) and UC Riverside (Dec. 11) in the next eight days.
