MSU closes non-conference season with difficult road tests
Between the intensity of finals week and the brief oasis of Christmas break, Montana State heads warm weather this weekend, closing the books on the non-conference season with games at Pepperdine on Sunday and New Mexico next Tuesday.
Montana State and Pepperdine tip off at 6 pm MT/5 pm PT on Sunday, Dec. 18. The game may be heard across Montana on Bobcat Radio Network stations, on the internet at www.msubobcats.com, and a webcast is available at www.pepperdinesports.com.
The Bobcats enter their last two non-league games until late February having won three of their last four, facing a Waves team MSU coach Brad Huse describes as “big and physical, very talented.” The Waves own the same record as MSU, 5-4, and feature a pair of strong frontcourt players in 6-8 Taylor Darby (11.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and 6-10 Corbin Moore (9.9 ppg, 8.6 rpg).
Pepperdine, in facts, grabs more than six rebounds a game more than the opponent and gets more than one-third of its points from its primary inside players, Darby and Moore.
Coinciding with MSU's visit to a couple of warm weather spots – and more to the point, with playing nine games in the Bobcat system – a pair of junior college wings continue to heat up for the Bobcats. Xavier Blount has scored 66 points in the last three games for MSU, while Jamie Stewart has four double-digit scoring games in the last five.
After Sunday's tilt, MSU heads for 7-2 New Mexico, the team's first meeting against the Lobos and its first visit to the famed Pit in Albuquerque since the 1996 NCAA Tournament. Tipoff in Albuquerque is 7 pm on December 20.
