Huse places strong cast of newcomers on display
Montana State men's basketball coach Brad Huse isn't positive how well his team will play in its preseason exhibition game Saturday, but he has a good idea how hard it will play.
“We've shown a penchant to compete,” said Huse, entering his sixth season as Bobcat head coach. “I like the mentality we've taken in our scrimmage and our practices. We have a ways to go yet from an execution standpoint. We need to show a little more responsibility with the basketball because we have guys that can score, so we have to be certain we're getting good looks on every possession. But I do like the way this group competes.”
Montana State's 2011-12 entry faces Colorado Christian at 7 pm Saturday in Worthington Arena. That contest offers Huse his first evaluation in live game circumstances, and provides Bobcat fans the opportunity to acquaint themselves with a host of new players.
Guard Rod Singleton returns as a starter at the point guard position. Tor Anderson, Shawn Reid, Jourdain Allou, Tre Johnson, Steven Davis and Jeff Budinich also return as letterwinners.
The new cast of characters is led by wings Jamie Stewart, Xavier Johnson-Blount and Christian Moon, and post Mohammed Fall, junior college transfers, along with freshman Michael Dison. Regardless of the number of newcomers, Huse's goal for the exhibition is the same as always.
“First, we want to have success,” Huse said. “We also want to see how we respond to being in a game situation. A lot of minutes will be taken by guys who haven't played in a Division I game. There are not a whole lot of absolutes for us in terms of having high production guys coming back. Those things will have to work themselves out in every 40-minute game opportunity.”
Huse said his team's personnel picture may be fluid early in the season.
“I can't say we've had a bunch of guys step forward and grasp spots yet,” Huse said. “We obviously have a starter back at the point guard in Rod Singleton, but Mike Dison has had a great fall. At virtually every other spot we're almost a two-headed monster. We have a couple options at every position, each with different strengths. We're not going to get too caught up in who's starting, especially early on.”
Still, Huse said his team's willingness to compete remains its hallmark. “I like how we compete. We're athletic. Guys have shown a real determination to get out and get after it. That in itself can help us. When you have to get guys to play hard that creates another set of problems, but we haven't had that situation.”
