MSU sophomore Janette Jackson notched her first career double-double to lift the Bobcats to a 68-64 win over Northern Arizona, Saturday night.
Montana State sophomore Janette Jackson recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lift the Bobcats to a 68-64 win over Northern Arizona, Saturday night in the Walkup Skydome.
"Janette really gave us a great effort, and I thought Jamie (Thornton) and Beata (Bak) gave us some important minutes, as well," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "Fatigue really set in during the second half, but we gritted it out for the win."
With 7:42 remaining in the opening stanza, Montana State (16-13, 9-7) used a 16-4 run to close of the half and enter intermission with a 36-24 advantage. The run was sparked by Sarah Strand with seven points.
The Bobcats built their largest lead of the game at 43-26 at the 18:26 mark following an Erica Perry three-pointer.
Northern Arizona (5-24, 3-13) chipped away at the lead to close to within 54-52 with 8:33 left on a Katie Pratt layup. However, the Bobcats scored six unanswered points to push the margin to eight points, and NAU would get no closer than four the rest of the way.
Also in double-figures for the Bobcats were Strand 15 and Perry 14.
MSU got a lift in the post by Thornton and Bak, as the duo combined for 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Bobcats won the battle off the boards, out-rebounding the Lumberjacks 52-42.
NAU was paced by Pratt with 20 points and five rebounds.
The Bobcats held the league's top scorer Amy Patton to ten points, eleven under her Big Sky Conference leading 21 points per game.
"I can't say enough for the game Janette gave us," Binford said. "She shut down Patton and recorded a double-double.
"It was a total team effort, and this is exactly what we need heading into the Big Sky Conference tournament."
The Bobcats will enter Thursday's Big Sky Conference tournament as the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Sacramento State at 4:30 p.m. (MST). The other opening round game features No. 4 Idaho State and No. 5 Portland State.
Montana State swept the Hornets in its two meetings this season; 95-86 in Bozeman, and 84-73 in Sacramento.
