MSU finishes 2-1 at Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic

Montana State made its trip to Hawai'i successful Monday night, and it had very little to do with spending time in the tropics.

Senior forward Bobby Howard scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, leading the Bobcats to an 80-76 win over Cal State Fullerton in each team's third game at the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic, hosted by the University of Hawai'i. The win gives Montana State a 2-1 record heading into its overnight return to the mainland, and leading into Friday's 5:30 pm home contest against Minot State.

Montana State led throughout the second half, but with just over a minute remaining shot a one-and-one free throw with a three-point lead. The first free throw missed, but Jourdain Allou gathered the rebound and slammed it for a five-point lead, and the Cats were not threatened again.

“I'm pleased with the win, and pleased that we won two different kinds of games (Saturday against Central Michigan and Monday against Fullerton),” said Bobcat coach Brad Huse. “We had a lot of different guys contribute tonight. Two nights ago it was our four or five main guys. That bodes well for the future of this team. We needed young guys, new guys, to gain some experience against Division I opponents, and they did that. Getting a couple wins makes us feel good, and also allows us to be more critical of ourselves.”

Howard and fellow veteran Erik Rush (17 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals) were supported by newcomers Rod Singleton and Allou. Singleton, the 5-10 points guard, scored 11 points while dishing out eight assists. Allou scored nine points with seven boards.
