The Montana State volleyball team went toe-to-toe with Big Sky leading Portland State, but fell 3-1 in a hard-fought decision
The Montana State volleyball team fell 25-22, 25-21- 20-25, 25-15 to league-leading Portland State on Saturday night in the Stott Center, but they certainly didn't go down without a fight.
Montana State (10-14, 3-8) had the defending Big Sky champs on the ropes in the first stanza, leading 22-20 a Portland State (15-8, 10-2) hitting miscue. Following a PSU timeout, the Vikings responded with five straight points to take the opening set.
In the second stanza, three straight Macy Page service aces tied the score at 20-all, but again the Vikings closed out the set on a 5-1 run.
MSU finally broke through after intermission, pulling away from a 16-all tie with a 5-0 run of their own. The Bobcats won the set on an Alex Penewell ace.
The final set was all PSU as the Vikings outhit the Bobcats .242 to -.067.
For the match, Montana State was led by Sarah Horton with a match-high 12 kills, while hitting .242 from the floor. Freshman setter Mackenzi Campbell dished out 36 assists and added five digs, while Penewell paced MSU at the net with five blocks. Senior libero Meghan Albiston recorded a match-high 17 digs.
The Bobcats served up a season high 13 aces against Portland State, including four from Rachelle Allen and three by Page.
Montana State will host Northern Arizona on Friday night in Shroyer Gym.
