Old and New Faces Shine in Blue-Gold Scrimmage

Bobby Howard was terrific, and several newcomers also played well
Returning All-Big Sky forward Bobby Howard scored a scrimmage-high 23 points and senior forward Danny Piepoli added 17 to lead Montana State in its Blue-Gold men's basketball scrimmage on Wednesday night.
MSU coach Brad Huse was pleased with his team's effort, and happy to get the first public outing under his team's belt. “I thought we played hard,” Huse said. “it was good to get out and play in a different setting, put on the uniforms and go out and battle. I saw guys relax more and more as the scrimmage went on. That's the idea behind this early season stuff, to get used to playing in a game-like situation, so I was pleased with that.”
On a team with nine new players and two redshirts, Huse was pleased that several stepped up. “Individually I thought we had some decent performances, but scrimmages are so hard because in one instance you have a positive but on the other side there was a negative. But overall I'm pleased with the effort the guys gave. It was good to see them relax and knocks down some shots. It was a good learning experience for us.”
Forward Tre Johnson typified the evening for most of the new players, missing his first three shots then draining his next four. Johnson finished with 13 points and nabbed a pair of steals. Guard Chris McCall, a freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., scored 10 points. Redshirt freshman Jeff Budinich scored 13 points and came away with five steals.
Montana State opens plays its only exhibition game against Mayville State on November 5 at 5:35 pm in Worthington Arena.
