Bobcats swept by Bulldogs, 4-0, on Saturday
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Montana State women's tennis team fell to Gonzaga in a 4-0 decision at the Stevens Center in Spokane, Wash., on Saturday.
The Bobcats fell in doubles before the Bulldogs took a trio of singles matches to earn the sweep. Montana State fell to 3-8 on the season while Gonzaga improved to 6-6.
"That was a very strong Gonzaga team we played today," Montana State head coach Hailey Barrett said. "We played some very strong doubles to start the match and had some great battles in singles. Overall, we learned a lot from this weekend, and we will come back stronger because of it. We will head back to Bozeman and put it some good work before we leave next weekend for our Spring Break trip in Portland and Seattle."
The Cats dropped each of their first two doubles matches as Gonzaga earned the doubles point to open the day. Lola Bean and Elle Middleton fell to Elizabeth Tindera and Diana Yanotovskaya in a 6-0 decision at No. 3 doubles, and Terezie Stverakova and Anna Wise dropped a close 6-4 match to Rose Hayes and Sveva Zerpelloni in the No. 1 slot. Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili trailed Gonzaga's Ella Nielsen and Emily Robertson, 5-4, on court two before their match went unfinished.
Gonzaga took three-straight singles points to earn the 4-0 match win. Robertson defeated Wise at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Hayes earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Stverakova on court four. Nielsen posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gelashvili from the second slot to clinch the match for the Bulldogs. The Bobcats' three remaining matches went unfinished after the two teams played to clinch.
Montana State heads back to the Pacific Northwest for a three-match road trip starting on Sunday, March 15, when the Cats face Portland State in Beaverton, Ore. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. MT.
