Cats earn first win of Big Sky campaign to open three-match road trip on Sunday
BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Montana State women's tennis team took singles wins on courts three through six while also picking up the doubles point to earn a 5-2 victory over Portland State at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore., on Sunday.
Montana State picked up its first Big Sky victory of the season with the victory, improving to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in Big Sky play to snap a seven-match losing streak. The Cats earned their second-straight victory over the Vikings and have now won four of their last five matches against Portland State.
"What a battle today," Montana State head coach Hailey Barrett said. "This was a full team effort all around. Kavya and Lola came up clutch and clinched the doubles point, and then we kept that energy heading into singles. Kavya and Angel both won solid singles matches, and then Terezie saved two match points and won a hard-fought tiebreaker to clinch the match. Lola followed up with a big win of her own shortly after. I'm so proud of this team, and we'll get ready for Portland on Tuesday."
Montana State opened the day by taking two of its three doubles matches to clinch its first point. After dropping its first doubles match on court one, Montana State bounced back on court two thanks to a 6-2 win by Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili. Lola Bean and Kavya Khirwar then played to a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles and came away with a 7-6 (7) victory to clinch the doubles point for the Bobcats.
Portland State responded to even the match with a victory at No. 2 singles before the Cats retook the lead after Kavya Khirwar defeated Anjola Ige, 6-4, 6-1, on court six. Portland State evened the match again with a win on court one before Montana State swept the final three matches of the day to clinch the victory. Angel Bean earned a sweep at No. 3 singles with her 6-2, 6-4 victory over Nene Uemura. Terezie Stverakova battled to a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 win over Kasumi Hirayama to provide the clinching point on court four, and Lola Bean added a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Hana Abdelhamid to earn the Bobcats' final point of the day on court five.
Montana State continues its road trip at Portland on Tuesday. The match will take place at 11 a.m. MT at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center in Portland, Ore.
