Ground game powers MSU to win
Â
Trailing 27-17 after two quarters, Montana State's Zac Crews wrestled a fumble away from Wildcats quarterback Nate Dahle near midfield. The Cats marched 49 yards in 11 plays, converting two third downs and a fourth down, and capped the drive with a 12-yard pass from Justin Lamson to Jordan Reed.
Â
"That was a great play (by Crews) to get the ball back," said MSU head coach Brent Vigen. "But it doesn't matter if we don't turn it into points."
Â
"There was just some indecision in a young quarterback on the mesh and I was able to fight for it, get in a little scrum down there, and ended up coming out with it," Crews said of that play.
Â
That turnover-turned touchdown initiated a sequence of events that included two three-and-outs forced by the MSU defense and a turnover by the Bobcats on offense. But the Cats took over late in the third quarter and marched to within a shade of the end zone as the third quarter expired. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Rocky Lencioni plowed into the end zone from one yard out to push the Bobcats into the lead, 21-17.
Â
After an exchange of punts, the Bobcats took over at their own 12 with 8:44 to play. MSU churned out an 11-play drive covering 6:50, but it almost wasn't nearly that long. On the drive's fourth play, Jared White dashed 73 yards for an apparent touchdown, but a holding penalty wiped out the play.
Â
Facing a second-and-19, Justin Lamson calmly zipped a pass in traffic to Dane Steel, who lunged forward for a 21-yard gain and a first down. That proved to be one of the pivotal plays in the game. From there, Lamson found Adam Jones for four yards then White gained six and five on successive carries. Jones gained two, Lamson found Rocky Lencioni for 14 yards.
Â
Then Jones took over. He gained five on first-and-10 from the 32, and on second down gashed the Wildcats for 27 yards and a touchdown. That gave Montana State a 38-27 lead with 1:54 to play.
Â
Montana State's defense then took over, forcing the Wildcats to drive the length of the field. Weber State scored on an 11-yard pass from Dahle to Robert Young for a touchdown. Only two seconds remained, however, and after MSU recovered the on-side kick attempt the Bobcats kneeled for the win.
Â
Weber State benefited from a pair of big special teams plays. With 9:38 to play in the second quarter, Dyson Parker returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. That gave the Wildcats a 17-14 lead. Later in the second quarter, after a Wildcats touchdown, MSU fumbled a kickoff return at the Bobcats 20. That set up a Weber State field goal, and after WSU blocked a Bobcat field goal attempt to end the half the visitors led 27-17 at the intermission.
Â
White and Jones turned in brilliant efforts to lead the MSU offense. White gained 125 yards and scored a touchdown, while Jones rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown. Justin Lamson threw for 232 yards on 23-fo-35 passing with two touchdown passes.
Â
For much of the day, the game verged on an old-style Big Sky shootout. The Bobcats rolled up 299 yards in the first half to Weber State's 226, a number suppressed by the Wildcats' 100-yard kickoff return. Montana State finished with 510 total yards and 31 first downs, while the Wildcats totaled 21 first downs and 364 yards.
Â
Third-ranked Montana State raised its record to 7-1 overall, 4-1 in Big Sky play. Weber State is 5-4, 4-2. The Bobcats host Cal Poly next Saturday at 1 pm.
