Montana State's defense came to life in the second half and the Bobcats came from behind to defeat Weber State 38-33 Saturday afternoon in a Big Sky Conference matchup.
Â
The third-ranked Bobcats trailed 27-17 at halftime, but second half scores by Jordan Reed, Rocky Lencioni and Adam Jones salted the win for MSU (7-1, 4-1).
Â
Running back Jared White, making his first start of the season, gave MSU a short-lived 7-3 lead in the first quarter with a 57-yard sprint to the endzone behind the blocking of Aiden Kaplan and Braden Zimmer. It was the longest scoring jaunt of White's career. A 2-yard scoring toss from Justin Lamson to a wide-open Rylan Schlepp, who snuck past the defense, gave the Bobcats a 14-10 edge early in the second quarter.
Â
But 22nd-ranked WSU (5-4, 4-2) returned a kickoff for a score to regain the lead before Myles Sansted's 29-yard field goal tied the game at 17-all. Weber closed out the second quarter with another touchdown and a field goal to take a 10-point lead into the locker room.
Â
In front of 22,167 fans, the Bobcats dominated the last two quarters. Zac Crews recovered a fumble for MSU and moments later Reed hauled in a scoring pass from Lamson, the quarterback's second on the day, to cut the deficit to 27-24. Then Josaiah Asuega forced a fumble that Bryce Grebe recovered. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Lencioni lined up in the backfield and took a direct handoff from Lamson to score a touchdown from a yard out. It was the first rushing score of Lencioni's career and made the score 31-27 in favor of the Bobcats.
Â
A sack by Seth Brock forced a WSU punt later in the fourth quarter and Jones then gave MSU a comfortable 38-27 edge with a 27-yard romp.
Â
WSU found the endzone with two seconds left to account for the final margin.
Â
White finished with 125 yards on 13 carries and Jones gained 115 on 22 carries. Jones' total gives him 2,838 for his career and moves him past Delmar Jones (1975-78) to No. 7 on the all-time Bobcat list. Lamson finished with 23 completions on 35 throws for 232 yards as MSU gained 510 total yards to 364 for the Wildcats. Dane Steel collected six passes for 74 yards while Carter Dahlke had six for 69.
Â
Tayden Gray, Brian Meredith and Cole Taylor led MSU with five tackles each as MSU held the Wildcats to just 138 yards in the second half.
Â
The Bobcats are home again this week when Cal Poly comes to Bozeman on Halloween afternoon.
