Angel Bean earns singles victory on court three to highlight Bobcats’ day in Boise
BOISE, Idaho – The Montana State women's tennis team fell in a 6-1 decision to Santa Clara at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday.
The Cats battled close with the Broncos across the board, but Santa Clara came away with a close doubles point and secured the victory with five singles wins to move to 1-1 on the season. The Bobcats fell to 3-3 on the year to conclude their first month of dual match play.
"We learned a lot this weekend from both of these matches," head coach Hailey Barrett said. "As always, I'm proud of how we competed and fought as a team. Everyone dug deep during this tough stretch, and we'll come back stronger from it. We will have a couple of weeks in Bozeman to work on what we need to, and we'll be ready to hit the road again later this month."
Santa Clara came away with the doubles point, winning the first two matches to secure the early lead. Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili fell on court two to Lizanne Boyer and Anna Rahman, 6-3, before Terezie Stverakova and Anna Wise took Tian Yu Dong and Ashley Katz down to the wire in a tight 7-6 (7-5) defeat. Lola Bean and Kavya Khirwar trailed to Daniella Dimitrova and Madhu Satishbabu, 6-5, at No. 3, but the match went unfinished following the conclusion of the court-one match.
Angel Bean helped the Bobcats even the point tally at one apiece, defeating Dong in a decisive 6-0, 6-2 showing at No. 3 singles to earn Montana State's lone point of the day. The Broncos then won the five remaining singles matches to secure their 6-1. Nia Gelashvili fell to Dimitrova 6-2, 6-3 on court one before Khirwar dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Katz at No. 5. Stverakova battled close in-her two set match before Santa Clara's Rahman earned the match-clinching point in a 7-5, 6-4 victory. The matches on courts two and six each went to three sets with Wise falling to Boyer 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 and Lola Bean suffering a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 defeat to Juliette Krumholz.
Montana State will return to action on Feb. 20 for its Big Sky Conference opener at Idaho. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. MT at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome in Moscow.
