Montana State opens Big Sky play in Moscow on Friday
MOSCOW, Idaho – The Montana State women's tennis earned a pair of singles wins but ultimately fell to Idaho, 5-2, in the team's Big Sky opener at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho, on Friday.
Friday's match featured two three-set singles matches, including one that ended in a tiebreaker, in a strong battle between the Bobcats and Vandals. The Bobcats moved to 3-4 on the season with their loss while the Vandals improved to 4-6.
"I'm proud of our fight today against a tough Idaho team," Montana State head coach Hailey Barrett said. "Anna and Angel played very well in singles, and Angel and Nia were just points away from winning their doubles match. Nia came very close to pulling out her singles match as well. We will regroup and get ready for another battle on Sunday against Washington State."
The two teams battled close in doubles to start the morning, with Idaho coming away with the point thanks to wins on courts three and one. Kavya Khirwar and Lola Bean fell to Valentina Rodas and Chenyue Xu at No. 3 doubles in a 6-2 decision to open the day. On court one, Anna Wise and Terezie Stverakova played a back-and-forth contest against Jessica Matthews and Naomi Schraeder, with the Vandals coming away with a tight 7-5 win to clinch the doubles point. Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili led Ida Johansson and Hanna Koprowsa, 5-4, on court two before their match was abandoned.
The Vandals increased their lead to 2-0, winning the first singles match of the day before the Bobcats earned back-to-back wins at Nos. 3 and 2 to even the match at two points apiece. Angel Bean earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Johansson for the Bobcats' first point of the day, and Wise earned the tying point in a gritty 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Schraeder. Gelashvili played a marathon match against Xu at No. 1 singles that lasted two hours and 48 minutes, with Xu coming away with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4-7) victory to give Idaho its third point. Idaho then added two more wins to cement its 5-2 victory, clinching on court five before also taking court six.
The Bobcats travel to Pullman, Wash., to take on Washington State on Sunday at 3 p.m. MT. The match will take place in Hollingbery Fieldhouse and can be watched live here.
