Montana State moves to 3-2 on the season
BOISE, Idaho – The Montana State women's tennis team fell to Boise State, 6-1, on Friday night in its first of two matches at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center this weekend.
Friday marked the second-straight match for the Bobcats against a Mountain West opponent, previously defeating Colorado State, 4-3, on Sunday before falling to the Broncos on Friday night. The Bobcats are set to face Santa Clara in Boise tomorrow morning to wrap up the month of January.
"I'm proud of how we competed today against a very strong Boise State team," head coach Hailey Barrett said. "Angel and Nia started strong and played a great doubles match. Terezie played well again and is continuing to build confidence. We are looking forward to another opportunity tomorrow against Santa Clara."
Montana State took an early lead in doubles thanks to a win at No. 2 courtesy of Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili. The Bobcat duo defeated Boise State's Stella Beldiman and Carla Grignac, 6-1, to give the Cats and early advantage. The Broncos then took the next two matches to secure the doubles point as Boise State's Tereza Polakova and Zdena Safarova defeated Terezie Stverakova and Anna Wise, 6-3, at No. 1 before Paula Schaefer and Masa Viriant edged past Lola Bean and Kavya Khirwar, 6-4.
The Broncos started strong in singles and never looked back, winning five-straight singles matches to clinch the match victory. Khirwar played a tight first set against Grignac on court five but ultimately fell in a 6-4, 6-0 decision to open singles play. Gelashvili squared up against Safarova at No. 1, with Safarova coming away with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Polakova earned the match-sealing point in a 6-1, 6-4 win over Wise. The two teams played out the remaining three singles matches as Lola Bean fell to Beldiman 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 before Angel Bean dropped a tough battle 6-4, 6-4, to Viriant. Stverakova earned the Bobcats' lone point of the evening in the final match, defeating Allison Isaacs 6-4, 6-4 on court four to conclude the match in Boise.
