“Playing back-to-back games is tough, and we went with a little deeper bench,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We challenged our bench and they responded. This was a total team win with everyone contributing.”
Montana State's Taylee Chirrick recorded a career-high 26 points and sophomore forward Addison Harris added 20 as the Bobcats defeated the University of Hawaii, 72-56, in its second game of the Maui Classic, Saturday night at Seabury Hall.
After shooting just 27.8% against Oregon State on Friday night, Montana State (7-4) hit for 48% from the field against the Rainbow Wahine, connecting on 30-of-63 attempts.
MSU and Hawaii (6-6) played even in the opening 10-minutes of the contest, before the Cats flexed its muscle in the second quarter outscoring UH 23-6 behind a 53.3% effort from the floor. Montana State entered intermission with a 34-17 advantage.
Montana State built an 18-point lead midway through the third frame, before Hawaii chipped away at the margin behind a 12-3 run. The Bobcats held a 47-38 cushion heading into the final period.
Hawaii kept its momentum early in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 48-43 with 8:53 remaining, but once again the Bobcats responded finishing the game on a 24-13 run to cruise to the 16-point win.
"Playing back-to-back games is tough, and we went with a little deeper bench," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We challenged our bench and they responded. This was a total team win with everyone contributing."
MSU's defense forced 29 turnovers, and the Cats parlayed the miscues into 31 points. The Bobcats registered 21 steals led by Jamison Philip's four.
Philip also added five points and three assists. Kadynce Couture and Grace Hintz came off the bench and added five points, apiece.
"It was a great response from Friday night," said Binford, referring to MSU's 53-51 setback to OSU. "We were able to be disruptive. It will be good to go into the (Christmas) break coming off a win."
MSU finishes its non-conference schedule 7-4 overall.
"We still have a long way to go," Binford said. "We will continue to work on developing consistent habits."
Keiara Curtis led Hawaii with 14 points.
