“Cam (Greenwald) and Joelie were very good tonight,” said MSU head coach Matt Houk.
Despite getting 22 kills and an impressive .568 attack mark from middle blockers Camryn Greenwald and Joelie Spelts, Montana State's lack of consistency throughout the match proved its downfall as Northern Colorado handed the Bobcats a 25-21, 25-23, 26-24 setback, Thursday night in Bank of Colorado Arena.
"Cam (Greenwald) and Joelie were very good tonight," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "I wish we could've gotten them the ball more often. I like how we battled in the red zone, but overall, we were inconsistent with our play."
Northern Colorado (10-13, 7-3) outhit Montana State (11-10, 6-4) .231 to .147 in the opening set, winning the frame on a kill by Alayna Tessena. The Bobcats trailed by six points in the early going, before taking a 16-15 advantage following an ace by Karli Heidemann. The Bears then rattled off seven unanswered points.
Set two featured seven ties, the last coming at 23-all. UNC closed out the set on a kill by Tessena followed a service ace.
The Bobcats trailed 21-17 heading down the stretch in the final frame but were able to even the score at 24-all on a kill from Madilyn Siebler. The Bears closed out the match on a kill from all-Big Sky performer Brynn Reines.
Greenwald paced the Bobcats with a match-high 13 kills, while hitting a career-best .571 from the floor. Spelts added nine kills and a .562 attack mark. Spelts also guided MSU with a team-high four blocks.
Defensively, senior libero Lauren Lindseth registered 16 digs.
MSU plays at Northern Arizona on Saturday at 2 p.m. (MT) in Flagstaff.
