Running back depth rounds into form during full week of work
BOZEMAN, Montana – Brent Vigen's message to his team on Tuesday was simple. "Rise up through the hard."
Vigen called Montana State's 10th practice of the preseason difficult by design but he liked how the team responded. "I thought our guys fought through it today," he said. "We're on practice 10 so we're moving along pretty good. We've got a lot in, and at the same time we're closing in on two weeks out from that first game so it's an important week to continue to see guys rise up."
With players scattered throughout the team missing time with minor injuries, Vigen said that days like Tuesday help players with less experience build a reserve of confidence. "Today was a hard practice based on what we had planned and maybe based where our numbers are at some positions," he said. "Those guys that find themselves in there, even with us getting some guys back in the days and weeks to come, there's going to be times where someone we weren't counting on is going to be out there on the field, and it's days like this that you fall back on as a younger guy, an inexperienced guy, to say, 'I can work through some stuff.' That's what showed up most today."

Returning starting running back Julius Davis' absence during camp with an injury highlights the depth and talent at that position. Bobcat coach Brent Vigen said he's enjoyed watching that competition play out.
Senior Elijah Elliott returns with the most experience, he's rushed for 1,267 yards as a Bobcat, but third-year back Jared White (617 career yards) and second-year player Scottre Humphrey (433 yards last season) add experience to the group. Redshirt freshmen Colson Coon and Adam Jones also bring a dynamic dimension.
"The continued development of Scottre Humphrey has been there," Vigen said. "Adam Jones, 10 days into camp, is one that has built off a really good spring and got off to a really good start here this fall. It's not to say other guys haven't, but I've been really pleased with Adam as he's come through. And you have Jared and Elijah and Colson right there, continuing to battle, as well. I'm excited about how that depth has moved forward."

Montana State added quarterback Thomas Buchanan of Red Lodge to its roster this week, MSU coach Brent Vigen said. The first team all-state selection is a 6-2, 210 lb freshman. Freshman quarterback Daveon Superales has left the program, Vigen said.
