Sydney Brewster and Ben Perrin pick up weekly conference honors after standout marks at Stanford Invitational
FARMINGTON, Utah – Sydney Brewster was named Big Sky Female Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week and Ben Perrin was named Big Sky Male Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
The award is the second in as many weeks for the freshman thrower and is the second of the season for the senior distance runner.
Brewster, a freshman from Sandy, Oregon, won the women's collegiate section of the shot put on Friday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California.
Exactly one week after setting the school record in her first collegiate outdoor meet at the Al Manuel Invite in Missoula, Brewster followed that performance up with a winning throw of 49-00.75. The freshman finished above competitors from Oregon, Stanford, Wake Forest, Fresno State, and Utah State to take the crown.
Brewster's mark of 52-02.5 from March 22 in Missoula is the 42nd best mark in NCAA Division I this season.
Perrin, a senior from Kalispell, Montana, placed fifth in a highly-competitive field in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational. The distance star crossed the line in 28:09.73, just one second off a school record that has been held by Big Sky and MSU Hall of Famer Shannon Butler since 1991.
The remarkable race featured 19 of the top-20 10,000 meter times in the country this year, with Perrin's mark currently ranking fifth nationally.
Perrin's weekly accolade is the latest chapter in what has been one of the most remarkable distance seasons by a Bobcat in school history. The Flathead High School product finished third at the 2023 Big Sky Cross Country Championships, placed tenth to earn All-Region honors at the 2023 NCAA Mountain Regional cross country meet, finished 53rd at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, broke the school record in the indoor 5,000 meters in December, and then placed third in the 3,000 meters and fifth in the 5,000 meters at the 2024 Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Championships.
