Freshman earns honor after school record in the shot put this weekend at Al Manuel Invitational
FARMINGTON, Utah – After a record-breaking debut in Missoula this weekend, freshman thrower Sydney Brewster was named Big Sky Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Brewster, a freshman from Sandy, Oregon, shattered the school record in the shot put on Friday at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula.
The Sandy High School product finished with a mark of 52-02.50, breaking the previous record of 50-02.00 held by Kris Shaffer since 2008.
Friday marked the outdoor collegiate debut for Brewster, who burst onto the scene with a fantastic indoor season this winter that saw her rise to No. 3 on the all-time top ten list in the shot put (50-08.25).
The freshman's record-setting outdoor mark this past weekend is currently the 25th-best throw in NCAA Division I this season, and the fifth-best by a freshman.
"Obviously we saw Sydney hits some big throws during indoor and it was great to see her build on that today," throws coach Jen Allen said after the meet on Friday. "Especially for the series she put together. For a freshman to be at this level is incredible."
