“It took a little bit to get the block going,” said MSU head coach Matt Houk. “I thought the staff – Jen (Houk) and Taylor (Els) - did a nice job getting on it and then having our kids execute.”
Montana State overcame a slow start to hand former Big Sky Conference member North Dakota a 24-26, 25-18, 25-18, 25-14 setback on Friday night in MSU's second match of the Bobcat/Blackridge Invite. Montana State defeated Oregon State 3-2 earlier in the day.
Montana State (2-0) trailed 22-15 in the late going of the opening set before responding with a 9-2 run to even the contest at 24-all following a block by Avery Turnage and Jourdain Kamps. North Dakota (0-2) answered with two points to take the set.
MSU turned the momentum in the second stanza at the midway mark pulling away from a 13-12 advantage with an 8-2 run as Kira Thomsen's service ace gave the Cats a 20-14 cushion. MSU closed out the set on a kill by Madilyn Siebler.
The Bobcats established their block in the third set behind the efforts of Turnage and Thomsen who recorded four and three, respectively. MSU finished the set out-hitting the Fighting Hawks .429 to .188, receiving five kills from Kamps.
"It took a little bit to get the block going," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "I thought the staff – Jen (Houk) and Taylor (Els) - did a nice job getting on it and then having our kids execute."
The final set was all MSU as the Bobcats jumped out to an 18-10 lead following a Turnage kill. Montana State cruised down the stretch winning the match on Thomsen's 14th kill of the night.
"After the first set, I think we figured out that all points are equal," Houk said. "We started hitting the open spaces and took what they gave us."
Thomsen finished the match hitting .288 from the field, while adding five aces, six digs and five blocks. Kamps also had a big performance with 13 kills, a .611 attack mark, five digs, and four blocks. For the match, MSU out-hit UND .324 to .116.
Defensively, Lauren Lindseth posted ten digs, while Turnage notched a match-best 10 blocks to go along with five kills. Setter Audrey Hofer dished out 28 assists and chipped in two aces and five saves.
