For the second time this season Montana State volleyball has swept the Big Sky Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors.
For the second time this season Montana State volleyball has swept the Big Sky Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors. Bobcat senior Kira Thomsen was named the offensive player of the week for the third time this fall, while junior Jourdain Kamps garnered defensive player of the week accolades.
The Bobcats are coming off the program's first ever road sweep of Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado. MSU sits in second place in the Big Sky standings and has played four of five matches away from the warm confines of Shroyer Gym.
Thomsen, a 5-10 outside hitter from Parker, Colo., averaged 4.33 kills and 4.50 points per set as the Bobcats defeated Northern Arizona (3-1) and defending Big Sky champion Northern Colorado (3-2). For the weekend, Thomsen totaled 39 kills and committed just 11 errors on 103 swings- good for a .272 attack mark. She had her best outing of the weekend at NAU registering 24 kills and a .305 attack mark. Thomsen's 24 kills were her most since posting a season-high 28 against St. Thomas (MN) in late August.
"Kira had to carry a large part of the offensive load this weekend," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "She hit with a ton of range, and when the opponent took one shot away, she found another way to score consistently. The consistency Kira has been showing on the offensive end of things allows her to be in the running for these kind awards."
Kamps, a 6-1 right-side hitter from Ennis, paced MSU defensively in its two matches averaging 2.67 digs and 1.22 blocks per set. Against the Lumberjacks, she recorded a season-best 14 digs, and followed that with 10 saves at Northern Colorado. Kamps notched six blocks at NAU and had five against the Bears.
Kamps' offensive prowess in both matches was impressive, as well. She tallied a season-best 18 kills at Northern Arizona and 17 at Northern Colorado. For the weekend, Kamps averaged 3.89 kills and 4.72 points per set, while hitting .309 from the field. Kamps also collected her fourth and fifth double-doubles of the season.
"Jourdain continues to improve at a great rate week to week," Houk said. "Her all-around game is really solid right now, and she's excelling in her ability to shutdown the left side of the court."
