The Montana State Nordic ski team will open its Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association circuit this weekend when it hosts the MSU Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Crosscut Mountain Sports Center. The 15-kilometer classic mass start will take place on Friday with the men going at 10 a.m., followed by the women at 11:30 a.m. Saturday will feature the 5k skate individual start event with the women beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the men at 11 a.m.
The alpine portion of the MSU Invitational will be held Jan. 30-31 at Bridger Bowl.
The Bobcat Nordic contingent is coming off a successful opening weekend which included two RMISA-NCAA qualifiers. The races were part of the U.S. National Cross Country Ski Championships in Houghton, Mich.
Last week, the men's 10k skate was highlighted by freshman Anders Weiss and sophomore Jack Conde taking the top two spots in the junior competition and locking them in for the spots on the U.S. team at the upcoming World Junior Ski Championships in Whistler, BC, Canada Jan. 25-Feb. 4. Graduate transfer Florian Winker notched a fourth place finish, while senior Reed Godfrey placed seventh.
On the women's side, freshman Tilde Bångman took third reaching the podium in her first RMISA race.
"We had a lot of kids with strong performances," said MSU Nordic head coach Adam St. Pierre. "Our season goal is to qualify a full squad of three men and three women for the NCAA Championships."
MSU ended its RMISA qualifier with the classic sprints. Bångman again paced the Bobcats finishing runner-up for her second consecutive podium appearance, while the men finished within a second of each other with Godfrey, sophomore Joel Power, senior Eli Hermanson, and senior Ty Godfrey taking 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th place RMISA finishes.
The Bobcats finished its stay in Michigan with a skate sprint. Bångman finished sixth in the race, while Kate Oldham, Katey Houser, and Sophia Mazzoni also finished in the top 30, with Mazzoni moving up to fifth and Oldham to seventh place on the qualification list for the World U23 Championships held concurrently with the World Junior Championships in Whistler at the end of January. Mazzoni will instead represent the US at the World University Games in Lake Placid, NY January 22-29.
The races at U.S. Nationals are scored towards the College Cup. MSU placed third overall behind RMISA rivals Utah and Alaska-Fairbanks.
